THE BURE VALLEY STEAM RAILWAY & NATIONAL TRUST PROPERTY BLICKLING HALL

Saturday 7th September

We travel this morning to Wroxham and the Bure Valley Railway Station for a nostalgic trip by steam on Norfolk’s longest narrow-gauge railway which runs between the bustling town of Wroxham to the historic market town of Aylsham. The 18 mile round trip runs through the pretty Bure Valley countryside following the meandering River Bure through meadowland and ancient pasture.

This afternoon we continue to Blickling Hall a Jacobean stately home situated in 5,000 acres of parkland in a loop of the river Bure, near the village of Blickling.  The mansion was built on the ruins of a Tudor building for Sir Henry Hobart from 1616 and designed by Robert Lyminge.  Explore above and below stairs in the mansion and discover the garden and the restored walled garden.  At the Stables Cafe you'll find a variety of hot and cold dishes to soup, sandwiches and cakes with vegetarian and gluten options with ample seating both inside and out.  If you feel like a pub lunch The Buckinghamshire Arms is a 17th century former coaching inn adjacent to the Hall which offers a traditional English pub lunch, with picturesque surroundings and plenty of history.  In the National Trust Shop, you will find tasty treats unique gifts, plant sales and second-hand books in its own shop.
