HISTORIC TOWN of WELSHPOOL and the WELSHPOOL & LLANFAIR RAILWAY

Saturday 10th August

Welshpool is a market town steeped in history and tradition on the River Severn.  It has a unique mix of architecture, modern and antique and set amidst the rolling borderlands and described as the gateway to Wales.  The indoor market stalls offer a wide selection of food, clothes, household goods, antiques, jewellery, arts and crafts, gifts, flowers and plants.  There is an interesting mix of local and national shops adorning the High Street with restaurants, cafes and pubs for refreshments.  This afternoon we visit the Welshpool and Llanfair narrow gauge railway station at Raven Square in Welshpool.  This has been the terminus of the narrow-gauge railway since 1981.  The railway is largely run by volunteers and provides steam-hauled passenger rides along the Banwy Valley to Llanfair Caereinion terminus.
