HIGHCLERE CASTLE TOUR, EGYPTIAN EXHIBITION AND GARDENS
Sunday 1st September
Designed by Sir Charles Barry, architect of the Houses of Parliament, this is considered to be one of the finest Victorian homes still in existence, which houses fine furniture and works of art. Today, the Castle is the home of the 8th Earl and Countess of Carnarvon and is known around the world as the real home of 'Downton Abbey'. The Egyptian Exhibition catalogues the 5th Earl's fascination with Egypt, his relationship with his friend Howard Carter and the discovery and contents of the tomb of Tutankhamun, including a magnificent reproduction of the sarcophagus. Tours of the Castle and Egyptian Exhibition are on a self-guided basis, with guides throughout to provide information and assistance. The Tearooms are open throughout the day offering a delicious selection of sandwiches, salads, wraps, cakes and scones. Light lunches and hot food are available between 12noon - 2pm. The Gift Shop is set in the Castle Courtyard selling a wide selection of exclusive, branded gifts for home and garden, inspired by different aspects of life at Highclere and reflecting this unique heritage.
