A SCENIC JOURNEY on the SKIPTON-SETTLE-CARLISE RAILWAY
Saturday 5th September 2026
We travel to Skipton railway station which is a Grade II listed station which serves the market town of Skipton in North Yorkshire. We board a morning diesel train to Carlisle on the iconic Settle-Carlisle Railway line. It came near to closure in the 1980s, but after years of campaigning, the line was reprieved. Sit back and relax on one of the UK’s most picturesque rail journeys crossing viaducts, traversing valleys, and passing by the stunningThree Peaks — Pen-y-Ghent, Ingleborough, and Whernside. Snacks, hot and cold drinks are available on the train. Our destination will be the historic border city of Carlisle where you will have a few hours to explore the town. Discover Carlisle Castle, a key part of the border reivers, Carlisle Cathedral and its iconic starry ceiling, or Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery. There are a good selection of cafes, restaurants, and pubs for refreshments. For shopping there is a mix of high street brands, independent boutiques, and a lively market, offering ample opportunities for retail therapy.
