THE NATIONAL TRUST GREAT TREASURE HOUSE of NOSTELL PRIORY and GARDENS
Saturday 7th June
The magnificent Nostell Priory is a Palladian house in Nostell, West Yorkshire. It dates from 1733 and was built for the Winn family on the site of a medieval priory. They made their fortune from the London textile trade during the Tudor Period. Generations of the family employed the best architects, craftsmen and artists to create a showcase for the fashionable design of the House. The world class furniture was supplied by Thomas Chippendale, many of the lavish interiors were designed by Robert Adams with historic paintings by famous artists. Unfortunately, it had to be gifted to the National Trust in 1953, due to a change of financial prosperity. The surrounding 300-acre estate includes parkland, meadows and lakes with resident wildlife, including swans, herons and geese. Explore the working kitchen garden and the Orangery and Menagerie garden, the latter being home to bats in the ancient archway. Refreshments are available at the Courtyard Café, with homemade lunches and tasty bakes, accompanied with hot and cold drinks. The shop has a wide range of gifts, books, homeware and plants.
