NATIONAL TRUST – THE PRIDE of WALES POWIS CASTLE, MUSEUM and GARDENS

Saturday 6th September

Perched on a rock above the garden terrace is the most beautiful of all Welsh Castles originally built as a fortress.  Edward Herbert purchased the castle and estate in 1587 where it remained in the hands of the Herbert family until 1952 when George, 4th  Earl of Powis, bequeathed the castle and gardens to the National Trust.  As major figures in Britain’s colonial East India Company, Robert Clive and his son Edward later 1st Earl of Powis collected many treasures of India and they are now displayed in the Clive Museum here.  Stretching out beneath the medieval castle is one of the finest gardens in Britain, with dramatic terraces, an Orangery, an Edwardian formal garden and a peaceful wooded landscape, there is so much for you to explore.  The Courtyard Restaurant is open daily serving hot lunches, sandwiches, savoury snacks, cakes and hot and cold drinks and the shop has a great selection of homeware, gifts, souvenirs and delicious treats to purchase.
